During the British Colonial period, Judicial Administration in the Eastern Province was gradually expanded to serve remote areas, including Pottuvil. The District and Magistrate's (combined) Court of Pottuvil is located in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, serving the legal and administrative needs of the Pottuvil area within the Ampara District.

Following Sri Lanka's Judicial Reforms, the Judicature Act No. 2 of 1978 established the District and Magistrate (combined) Court of Pottuvil with the objective of enhancing access to justice and ensuring the efficient administration of justice for the people of the region.

1. Early Operations & Circuit Court Status (Pre-2009)

Since its establishment, the court has been exercising its jurisdiction in accordance with the laws of Sri Lanka, hearing and determining criminal and civil matters that fall within the jurisdiction. Before the year 2009, the Magistrate's Court of Pottuvil functioned near the main road in Pottuvil as a circuit court to hear only criminal matters under the District and Magistrate Court of Akkaraipattu.

2. Establishment as Permanent Combined Court (08th January 2009)

A significant institutional milestone was achieved when it was officially established as a permanent District and Magistrate's (combined) Court since 08th of January 2009, vesting it with comprehensive civil and criminal jurisdiction.

3. Relocation to Siyambalanduwa Road

Later, the previous roadside location was found to be very noisy and was also situated adjacent to the hospital. Consequently, under the advice of the Ministry of Justice, land donated by a generous benefactor opposite the Pottuvil police station along the Siyambalanduwa road in Pottuvil was selected, and Cabinet approval was granted to establish a dedicated court complex under regional judicial development frameworks.

4. Construction & Ceremonial Opening (05th November 2013)

His Lordship Chief Justice Hon. Asoka de Silva and Minister of Justice Hon. Rauf Hakeem officially visited Pottuvil to lay the foundation stone for the Permanent Pottuvil Court Complex, restoring formal state judicial infrastructure to the area. The newly constructed Pottuvil court complex was ceremonially declared open on 05th of November 2013 by His Lordship Hon. Mohan Peiris, Chief Justice of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, upon the invitation of Hon. Rauf Hakeem, Minister of Justice.
